The Floating Opera Company imagines site-specific productions with staging tailored specifically to each venue and cannot be performed anywhere else. It brings awareness to the preservation of historic landmarks.
Our first production was Così fan tutte, inspired by the video game Super Mario, put an unconventional spin on the classic opera. Bridgeport Art Center’s loading dock worked as a perfect venue, featuring unique acoustics that ensure a high-quality musical performance. The Bohemian National Cemetery’s crematorium was the ideal venue for our second production; Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Most recently, we wrote and premiered War & Peace, a multi-media, fully-staged opera that tells the story of American soldiers leaving for war and returning home to a world they no longer understand. This piece is a composite opera, a mosaic of important works from the World War I era through the present, including music by Francis Poulenc, Arlene Harden, and Bob Dylan. We performed this in the sanctuary of the Chicago Temple.
Our productions are an invitation to a world full of possibility. An opera retold through a new lens or set in a unique space inspires conversation and engages free thinking.
We continue to bring affordable and fun operatic performances to audiences without access to classical music. We have successfully produced 20 opera performances throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, of which over 25% were free to the public.
